Save-a-Mate

An alcohol and other drug harm minimisation programme from the Red Cross

 Save-a-Mate (SAM) is an interactive workshop specifically for secondary school-aged students,
designed to encourage and empower young people to act in real time to “save a mate”.
The programme is a 90 minute presentation including video scenarios, presentations,
activities and group work, targeting young people aged 14 – 19 years and those that work with them.

Five key alcohol harm-reduction strategies

You might see some letters to the editor in the Nelson Mail that we are sending this week, in response to a letter and article about alcohol issues affecting us locally. If you are concerned about the negative effects of alcohol, you can support the public health policies endorsed by the World Health Organization as most effective in reducing alcohol-related harm.

They are:
1. Raised alcohol prices
2. Raised purchase age
3. Reduced alcohol accessibility
4. Reduced marketing and advertising
5. Increased drink-driving counter-measures
 
The Law Commission is still reviewing the Sale of Liquor Act (1989) to examine and evaluate the current laws and policies relating to the sale, supply and consumption of liquor in New Zealand.  On 27 April 2010 The Commission published its final report entitled ‘Alcohol In Our Lives: Curbing the Harm’   The report contains 153 recommendations to Government, which are currently under consideration.
